Country Chat - June 2022
June 2022, Here in England we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation – an astonishing span of years during which she has met 13 US presidents; I find it amazing that our Prime Minister that year was Winston Churchill, born in 1874! I remember the coronation well, as an eight year old school kid whose family, like countless others, had just bought a TV specially so we could watch it.
I had not yet discovered country music but find it awesome to reflect that when she came to the throne, Hank Williams was still performing and charting with Jambalaya and You Win Again and the Korean War was still raging reflected in Billboard country hits like Ernest Tubb’s Missing In Action.
Which leads me to the first of BACM’s three new releases (June 2022): COUNTRY MUSIC GOES TO WAR -Various Artists. BACM CD 688. 24 war-related songs mainly from the WWII or immediate post war era. It features many of the big names of the era including Roy Acuff, Gene Autry T. Texas Tyler and Elton Britt as well as a couple of ‘Down Under’ stars, Frank Ifield and Slim Dusty.
WHITEY & HOGAN -Sunny Side Of Life. BACM CD 689. Some superb close harmony duets from this North Carolina guitar/mandolin duo, now forgotten but who enjoyed immense popularity in their heyday – well deserving rediscovery through our compilation.
Finally, for our 690th CD, a second compilation of old time comedy, tunes and songs, many from the Prohibition era or its aftermath (late ’20s-early 30s) in MIRTH, MUSIC & MOONSHINE – Old Time Comedy. Vol 2.
Till next time, Best to all our friends and customers on behalf of all the team
