It’s 20 years since we put together our first collection of Dalhart’s recordings (CD number 17!) and it’s become one of our best sellers over the years with many requests for a follow up, so here at last is Volume 2, all early recordings from 1926 and 1931, nice mix of hillbilly, popular and novelty numbers. Includes his 1926 hit Puttin’ On The Style, recorded 30 years before Lonnie Donegan’s 1957 skiffle version (which updated the 1926 “pair of horses" to 1957's “hot-rod car!"

Timely, although already in preparation before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, we have compiled 24 war-related recordings many from Country Music’s top names in the WWI and post-war era - including Gene Autry, Merle Travis and Elton Britt. To quote from Paul Hazell’s liner notes “A wonderful selection of tracks from various sub-genres of country music, together encapsulating many facets of war – both in the field of battle and back home – the tragedy and loss alongside courage and striving for survival and many moments of humour”. Thanks are due to John Cowling for the concept and for providing several of the tracks.

Continuing our releases of music from different areas of the USA, we have put together this bunch of recordings, various artists from the West Texas / New Mexico scene. You’ll find some very rare items amongst this selection. Surely the sort of music which Jim Reeves was listening to in his teens, influencing his own early recordings. This CD is a neat companion to our earlier selection of songs from the Texas Panhandle (BACM CD 574), this time going a bit further west!

Following the 2016 release of Vol. 1, BACM delves again into radio broadcasts made by western swing, cowboy and country jazz line-ups of the pre-WWII era. The recordings range roughly from winter 1933-34 through 1942. Many of the performers featured are far from household names, some downright obscure. The best known is surely Pee Wee King, captured in telling early performances from the Grand Ole Opry, and there are performances from other notables like Rex Griffin, Wiley & Gene and The Ranch Boys.

Our first CD from the Warren Brothers, Shorty and Smokey, stalwarts of the Northeastern country music scene for several decades, starting from the mid ‘40s. Tracks feature several of their regular or guest vocalists – nice selection of songs and styles. Described as: "... mainstream country music of the era, with pop and western overtones ... with some western swing influence'. Thanks to Kevin Coffey for the research and sleeve notes and to Al Turner for his help sourcing the recordings.

Rare recordings from the San Diego area , many not previously commercially recorded. Our thanks are due to Kevin Coffey for all the hard work which went into this production. Fans of Western Swing will enjoy this, bringing us the sounds which were entertaining in the Bars, Honky Tonks and Dance Halls throughout the great South West and surrounding States during the post war years. Most of the tracks are rare and possibly not commercially recorded. So, 70 years on, lend your ears to the thrill of this country-tinged swing music bouncing along the air waves and helping lift the spirits of a population who had only recently lived through the troubles of WW2.

Dallas was a hotbed of progressive string band music in the early 1930s, influenced by its neighbour Fort Worth (the reputed Cradle of Western Swing) and taking on board other regional jazz, blues and hillbilly influences. BACM has already dedicated some CDs to early Dallas western swing stalwarts like Bill Boyd and Roy Newman and this collection focusses on lesser known groups. Many of the musicians were legends in their own right including tenor banjoist and mainstay of the Light Crust Doughboys Marvin Montgomery and singer-guitarist Dick Reinhart. Nice mix of styles including stripped down blues from the Paradise Joy Boys with what we believe is the first ever cover of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s Matchbox Blues. The fiddler is trained violinist and child prodigy, Felix St Clair. Other highlights included four fine recordings from “hot” Hawaiian trio the Hauulea Entertainers, led by local steel guitarist and teacher J. B. Stevenson and nine from the Wanderers, a Western Swing group much influenced by Milton Brown.

Our first CD of recordings by fine country and rockabilly singer-songwriter Warner Mack whose recording career began in 1957 and who carried on performing through to the early 90s. Our CD features two complete albums (The Golden Country Hits Vol 1 and Vol 2 from 1961 and 1962 respectively) plus four other recordings from the same era. Good solid 'Nashville Sound' country, reinterpreting many of the best country songs of the era recorded by the likes of Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Ray Price and Hank Locklin.

A fine band, although little known outside West Texas and Southern New Mexico, where they were established performers on the dance band circuit and through their radio and TV live performances. Johnson was a big fan of Western Swing from childhood on, becoming an accomplished steel player. After war service and a stint as a DJ he joined the established Bluebonnet Playboys band in 1952. These live recordings show the band in good form, with various vocalists including long time member Lindsey Smith and guest vocalists Floyd Tillman and Red Brown. Nice mix of songs, Western Swing standards, popular country songs of the day - and from 1956 - a curious jazzy version of See You Later Alligator!

Many of the recordings have not been previously released since the 1940s and include several gems.

Another treat for hard core Western Swing fans. A collection of live recordings culled from various sections of radio and TV programmes broadcast during the early 1950s as well as some direct dance hall tapings. Thanks are due to musicologist Kevin Coffey for putting this together including the research and liner notes. Highlights include Hoyle Nix’s live version of Big Balls In Cowtown (his studio version was on BACM CD 453) and three TV recordings from Texas Jim Lewis. The sound quality is not up to that of commercial recordings but we do think it captures well the atmosphere of the dance halls & beer joints of the day.

Their "When my blue moon turns to gold" composition has become a country standard but their recordings have been overlooked in recent decades. However, they were top favourites on Texas radio stations back in the 1930s and 40s and this selection from the vaults, 20 of their Okeh and Columbia recordings, shows why. As a bonus, we’ve included tracks from two of their radio shows.

Brothers Zeke and Zeb Turner were both superb guitarists and both contributed session work on some classic Hank Willams recordings (eg: Zeb on Wedding Bells!). Both took early to the electric guitar, and our collection of Zeb’s recordings kicks off with Zeb’s superb landmark recording of Mountain Boogie. He is nowadays best remembered through his song writing credits (including the classic It’s A Sin, which charted for Eddy Arnold and Marty Robbins and was also recorded by George Jones and Don Gibson as well as Elvis). But he was also a superb and distinctive vocalist, here heard mainly on his own compositions.
