September 18th – birthday anniversary of Hank Penny (Herbert Clayton Penny, Sept 18, 1918 – Apr 17, 1992), Western Swing bandleader, vocalist and banjo player. A lifelong fan of jazz whose bands over the decades (late 30s through to the 70s) featured many of the top musicians of the day. Charted three times (“Steel Guitar Stomp” (1946) which included Merle Travis on guitar, “Get Yourself a Red Head” (1946), and his own composition “Bloodshot Eyes” (1950) – which became a Rock hit for legendary Rock n Roller rock and roll singer Wynonie Harris.
