September 15th. Birthday of Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 – November 23, 1992), American country singer, fiddler and music publisher who helped in the transition of country music from its Old-timey, hillbilly origins into  a mass market popular genre in the 1950s and 60s.  After several years learning his entertaining craft on the vaudeville circuit, Acuff cut his first recordings in 1936 – sessions which included two of his ‘Trademark’ songs, Wabash Cannonball and Great Speckled Bird. A prolific recording artist who stayed ‘Country’ throughout his career, he continued recording till 1989. So far, BACM have compiled just one CD, recordings from the 1940s and ‘50s …
