November 23rd. Remembering “Spade Cooley” (Donnell Clyde Cooley, December 17, 1910 – November 23, 1969), American Western swing musician, band leader who vied with Bob Wills for the title “King Of Western Swing”.. A part Cherokee Oklahoman whose family fled the Dust Bowl for California, Cooley played fiddle with a Jimmy Wakely band before replacing Wakely as leader. Cooley’s band chalked up several big hits in the mid ‘40s including “Shame on You” and “Detour”, many featuring deep voiced Tex Williams (see the catalogue for Tex Williams CDs). The Archive have issued two collections of rare Cooley live performances, some instrumentals some with Tex Williams and other supporting vocalists – mix of Western Swing and popular numbers, mainly upbeat and foot tapping …
