Jan 26th – Birthday of Doc Hopkins (Jan 26, 1900- Jan 3, 1988), fine Kentuckian folk balladeer who had a wide repertoire of traditional folk and hillbilly ballads. He became popular on many of the era’s country music radio shows, telling the stories as well as singing the songs. An accomplished musician – three-finger-and-thumb guitar picker as well as on banjo and mandolin he re-emerged from obscurity during the folk revival of the mid 1960s and continued, playing at his last folk festival in 1982. One of those ‘Lost & forgotten’ great talents well deserving of another listen.
