August 4th. Anniversary of the first recordings by “Father Of Country Music” Jimmie Rodgers, influential Mississippi Blue Yodeler. At a temporary recording studio in the Taylor-Christian building in Bristol Tennessee on 4th August 1927, he recorded two songs, the hauntingly sombre The Soldiers Sweetheart – curiously one of the only yodel-free songs Rodgers ever recorded – and Sleep Baby Sleep, one of my own personal all time favourites. (Jimmie Rodgers recordings have not been issued by BACM as they are widely available on other labels including the superb and exhaustive Bear Family set
