September 29th. Birthday of Gene Autry (September 29, 1907 – October 2, 1998). Autry’s career began as a Jimmie Rodgers imitator in the late 1920s before scoring his first big hit with “That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine” (duet with Jimmy Long) in 1932. His extraordinary screen career as a “Singing Cowboy” kicked off in 1935 and his 93 movies and more than 90 episodes of the Gene Autry Show TV brought him worldwide popularity and brought country music to a national audience and worldwide. BACM have so far issued 8 Gene Autry compilations from the vaults including rare radio transcriptions never previously available on either CD or vinyl.
