22 July – birthday anniversary of Obed “Dad” Pickard (, patriarch of The Obed Family one of the early pioneers on the roster of the Grand Ole Opry, becoming regulars in 1926. Pickard was a talented multi-instrumentalist and his group The Pickard Family were probably the first traditional vocal family to broadcast, predating the Carter Family by over a year. They achieved considerable regional popularity not just via their WSM appearances but also in Detroit, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia and – in the late 1930s over the powerful border radio station XERA. Their repertoire was a mix of novelty songs and traditional old timey and sentimental songs, showcased on BACM’s CD 084, which features recordings from 1927-29.
