25th January – birth anniversary of the extraordinarily talented Rusty Draper (Jan 25, 1923 – Mar 28, 2003). Made his first Victor recordings at age 16, as Sons Of The Ozarks, Draper providing vocals and guitar accompanied by lifelong sidekick, Missouri fiddler Ozark Red and bassist Howard “Froggie” Mattson. This kicked off a long and successful multi-faceted career; not just a superb guitarist and vocalist he also contributed rube comedy and impersonations of other singers, crooner-pop as well as country. Our first BACM set includes all 12 of the 1939 Sons Of The Ozarks recordings as well as a nice cross section of his other ‘early’ recordings (up to the early 1950s). The second set covers the best of his later, 1950s era recordings.
