25 July – remembering the great Tommy Duncan (11 Jan 1911- 25 July 1967), nowadays best remembered for his association with Bob Wills’ band The Texas Playboys. He was their lead singer through the 1930s and 1940s but also had writing credits on several of their big hits including New San Antonio Rose, Time Changes Everything and Bubbles In My Beer. After leaving Wills’ band in 1948 he had further success with his own western swing group and then with the Miller brothers before reuniting with Wills in 1960. A distinctive and versatile vocalist he left a legacy of fine recordings, from early country blues modelled on his early hero Jimmie Rodgers through to fine country crooner interpretations of popular and western songs.
