20 May. Birthday anniversary of Missouri country musician and songwriter Johnny Rion (20 May 1916 – 31 Dec 1968) who began his radio career in 1937, accompanying himself on guitar singing hillbilly songs and much influenced by his idol, Jimmie Rodgers. This kicked off an ‘On air’ career that would continue for 60 years. Despite his talents both as songwriter and musician he never achieved national fame, and BACM was delighted to rescue a CD-full of his fine recordings from obscurity, several with just Johnny accompanying himself on guitar but some with Chet Atkins (guitar), Roy Wiggins (steel) and Dale Potter (fiddle) as session musicians.
