19 October – birthday anniversary of Hugh Cross (Oct 19, 1904- ? 1970), old timey musician – singer, songwriter, guitarist and banjo picker – associated with many of the top hillbilly and string band acts of the 1920s and early 1930s, including Riley Puckett (with whom Cross recorded the first commercially available cut of Red River Valley) and Gid Tanner & the Skillet Lickers – which had the legendary Clayton McMichen (Crosss brother in law) on fiddle. BACM offer two CDs of his recordings, CD 211, Old Time Music From The Smoky Mountains and CD 304 featuring cuts from his late 1930s radio shows with Shug Fisher as Hugh & Shugs Radio Pals.
