17th March – anniversary of  fiddle virtuoso Hugh Farr (6 Dec 1903 – 17 Mar 1980) who contributed jazzy fiddle and bass vocals to the legendary Western harmony group, the Sons Of The Pioneers. Hugh and brother Karl (guitar) joined Bob Nolan, Len Slye  (‘Roy Rogers’) and Tim Spencer in 1934, just before the group became The Sons Of The Pioneers, Hugh remaining with them till the late 50s. The great classical conductor Leopold Stokowski once cited Farr as one of the two greatest natural violinists of the 20th Century (the other, the legendary classical virtuoso Fritz Kreisler).  Some great examples of Hugh’s fine and inventive fiddle playing on BACM’s two collections of  Sons  Of The Pioneers  transcription recordings cut in the early ‘40s, across a wide range of moods and styles.
