11 August – remembering legendary steel guitarist Don Helms (Feb 28, 1927 – Aug 11, 2008) best known for his association with Hank Williams but later a prolific session man and producer. Played on around 100 of Hanks recordings, his wailing steel a perfect fit with Hanks mournful tones on the likes of I Can’t Help It and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry as well as the driving twang on Hanks uptemp classics like Jambalaya and Hey, Good Lookin.
Helms played on many of Johnny Cashs early Columbia recordings and is heard on many classic country hits including Patsy Clines Walking After Midnight and Lefty Frizzell’s Long Black Veil.
