Country Chat - June 2013

As time goes by (rather quickly it seems at my age) I like to think I have a good sense of what our customers will and won’t like. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case and I was completely wrong about your opinions on the Whitey McPherson CD that we issued last month.  Instead of everyone moaning that it wasn’t country as we all know it, but more like jazz, I had only one complaint. Instead, your letters suggest that most of you really enjoyed it, especially the early tracks recorded back in the ‘30s.

Well, this month I can honestly say that all three discs are plain country / bluegrass all from the 50/60s era:

BACM CD 415.   TEXAS BILL STRENGTH.

This CD is all due to being in contact with Bill’s son Dale who after many years decided to go through all his father’s old belongings that had been stored away since he died.  There he found recordings that even he had not heard before, some unissued and some old radio shots, plus more that could not be played because of  deterioration. What a find!   Imagine that just about every performer has something like this stacked away. This is one reason why we try hard to conserve everything in this line of music. I hope that you’ll find this masterpiece interesting and enjoyable.

BACM CD 416.  JIMMIE LOGSDON

The wonderful voice of Jimmie Logsdon brings you a whole bunch of country as well as gospel numbers that were recorded mostly in the 50s.  Most of these originated from a series of EPs that were popular back in those days and were made for sales at concerts or through mail order shops like Jimmie Skinners’ or Ernest Tubbs’. They sold very cheaply  through advertising on the radio to the millions that used to tune in to the local DJ some 60 odd years ago.  Songbooks were often sold in the same manner. What a pity it’s all changing.

BACM CD 417.TENNESSEE RIVER BOYS

Just to confuse the issue the two lots of Tennessee River Boys were not connected. Paul (Boswell) and Roy (Pryor) recorded bluegrass music for Mercury back in the late 50s whereas the rest of the CD was by Curtis McPeake from a Cumberland LP entitled “The Tennessee River Boys”. How confusing did they  want to make it?  If my opinion is worth anything these days, then you’re going to love this rare release.  Thanks to Walt Saunders for all the information that he sent us on Paul & Roy, and to Bryan Chalker for his monthly speedy input.  We appreciate everything.

In a few days’ time (I’m writing this at the end of May) we’ll hopefully have our new web site open and running.  All the work has been done by one of our loyal customers and his son, both contributing their time to help the archive achieve its mission to preserve the roots of country music and all its offshoots.  It seems country music enthusiasts can be a generous bunch, many others have helped us over the years and continue to do so – helping with research and writing liner notes for example.

This gets me reflecting on the future.  What we have now is the result of several decades of  work – creating this 1 million plus collection of all kinds of country memorabilia and recordings, which eventually required the dedicated archive building to store it all in. Stuff still flows in all the time as does our work on cataloguing and  archiving – and we are still able to put out three new CD releases every month – hard work, which I am still enjoying although if there is someone out there interested in taking over the archive in due course, I’d be interested in hearing from you!

Early this month (May) we welcomed our regular visitors from Sweden Bo Berglind and  Kent Heinman  who were on our shores for their yearly visit.  If only for a few hours it’s really nice to meet people with the same interests  as ours and hear their views on the way country music is headed.  Yes it’s good to play host to such dedicated people.  Thanks to you all for popping in on us.
