Country Chat - January 2016 Newsletter

Jan 2016. I hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and maybe had some moments to sit back and listen to some of our music  we have issued during the past 14 years. Yes, it’s been that long now, but hopefully many of you agree with us it has been well worth it. I remember well that when Brian and I first started this venture we both thought that a few dozen CDs would take care of the good quality country music recorded before 1962.

This proved not to be and here we are with 511 BACM CDs  now in the catalogue. And yet we are still discovering new gems and in fact we sometimes feel we’ve barely scratched the surface. A lot of it  from what we have stored away on the shelves here at the Archive; but we also have a network of friends and ardent collectors all over the world, always ready to provide or loan us discs from their collections to help us complete each month’s three CDs. True partners in helping us preserve country music’s great legacy and we sincerely thank them.

So let’s get on to our first releases for the New Year; in my opinion, three of the best country music items you’ll ever hear:

FRANKIE MARVIN – Early Recordings By Gene Autry’s Sideman Vol 2.  BACM CD 509

As our title says, he was just that, Gene Autry’s Number One sideman. Without the Marvin brothers input into the career of Gene Autry I doubt very much if he would have made it as big as he did in those gun toting years on the silver screen. The wonderful sounds of voice, guitar, and on top of that their song writing skills, all made Gene Autry into the popular hero that he was when the world needed a hero to look up to. You can hear the sounds of Johnny Marvin on BACM CD 075. More of him will be heard on a CD from us later. I’d give this new CD a five star rating.

LEW CHILDRE.  FISHING BLUES.  BACM CD 510

Here’s a gem for country music lovers everywhere. Starting off with his pre war recordings, right through to the late 1950s with tracks from a fantastic LP that issued by Don Pierce at the Starday recording studio. Known for his two chord slide guitar he really made himself popular with the likes of old timer Stringbean, Grandpa Jones and artists of that genre.

He wasn’t photographed very much in his life although maybe there are some better than we’ve produced on our cover, best we could find. Lew was a down and out salesman and could sell you the moon if asked to. A most enjoyable CD.

HILLBILLY ON A BUDGET Vol 2. BACM CD 511

All the music here has been selected by Al & Phil Tricker from their collections and introduces cover songs of the big country hits of the 50s and early 60s.  Ok so you’ve all heard the songs before but this brings them all into a new light – and maybe ready to be a hit all over again? The Big 4 label had many an EP for sale in stores like Woolworth at a fraction of the price RCA Decca or Columbia were asking for theirs. I now find them all very good listening and quite a refreshing change from the originals by the likes of Eddy Arnold , Hank Snow or even Jim Reeves. Play this  a few times and they’ll grow on you, that’s what I’m finding anyway.

When you receive this it’ll be the New Year and let’s all hope that it will be a peaceful one for a change. I hate to hear of the tragedies occurring  all over the world, what is wrong by trying to live our lives in peace? Let’s hope that the younger generation starts to repair and rebuild the damage that has been caused. Let’s conserve what we have left, each doing our bit to make the world a better and happier place.

FROM ALL HERE AT THE ARCHIVE & FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN OF ASSOCIATED WITH US OVER THE YEARS.

The BACM BOYS  Dave, Brian, Barry, Robin et all
