Country Chat - December 2018

1st December. Well, here we are at the end of the year again with Christmas looming up and festivities bringing smiling faces across the world.

A month or two back we sent Freddie Hart some copies of our new CD, FREDDIE HART – The Whole World Holding Hands, but then got the sad news he had passed away before receiving them. However he had seen and given his approval to the CD cover. A true gentleman and a friend of BACM; he will be missed and we send our condolences to his family and friends.

We are already hard at work doing the groundwork for the CDs we will release in 2019, researching artistes and finding and cleaning up the tracks. There’s still plenty left in the pot to make our choices from in 2019, we’re not exactly hard up for good country music for you in the coming months.

I think that our three December 2018 CD issues are very good with some fine and interesting recordings mainly from the 1940s and 50s.

The first of our new CDs is a second volume of Rose Maddox backed up by her brothers that were around her for most of her entertaining life.  I’m sorry but the recording standard of some of the tracks is not 100 per cent, due to the fact that 4Star records were not among the best in the pressing department. But they are still of a listenable standard I think you will agree and the CD includes a few Columbia tracks with better audio quality. I am told that the owner of 4Star was not the nicest, not one to do business with as the stars rarely got paid for their songs. But those days are behind us and now we are bringing you the best from that label. Vinyl was very hard to obtain just after the war so many companies tried several formulas to keep their cost down to a minimum. There are rumours that 4Star even used straw and wood chippings in their ingredients.

Our second CD is a mixture of Radio comedy and commercial songs by Tommy Sosebee.  What a good voice this man although sadly he continuously abused it by drink etc. He was only 44 years old when he passed and had a brilliant career ahead of him if he had been able to discard the bottle.  The shows on the disc include other artistes as well so he will hear the likes of the Willis Brothers and the Duke Of Paducah with his blend of Country Music humour.

Last on our list is a selection of pre-Louisiana Hayride era tracks from the Pelican State, Louisiana. Some superb upbeat sounds selected by musicologist Kevin Coffey so you can be sure that his selection will be well received.

Remember that our CDs make a good Christmas present for friends and relatives who love country music.

So if we’re all in good health we be back again in January 2019 for our seventeenth year in producing music for you – we’ve been producing our three CDs every month since the beginning of 2002. As for ourselves we never get tired of finding new tunes for you from the Golden Age.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
From Dave, Brian and Barry and the rest of the BACM team, Kevin, Robin, Derek, Al and Phil, Bryan et all!
