Country Chat - Chatterbox- July 2016

1st July. Hi Everyone, Let me first start off with wishing everyone a marvellous summer or if you’re in a different part of the world where it’s now winter we hope the clouds will soon roll by and let some sunshine in. You’ve all had it too good, now it’s our turn, brief as it may turn out to be.

It never ceases to amaze me that there is such good undiscovered music around just waiting for the likes of us here at BACM or any other company to find it and treat the world to the wonderful musicians that played in the spooky dark & smoky bars or in the bunkhouse just for the fun of it in the years gone by.

This month, as you’ll see when you check out our three CDs, that there’s no stopping the flow of great songs and musicians that continue to come out of the Archive every month. I’ve been listening to and collecting country music for getting on 60 years now – and by now I should have run out of ‘new’ artistes, those I’ve never heard of. So I continue to be amazed as we turn up new recordings and ‘discover’ great talents which have so far escaped me. Plenty of examples on our first CD  this month – long lost radio recordings  in the Western Swing style from the 1930s and early 40s. I had never heard of “Carl Cole and his Flint Hill Boys” or “Jerry Sadler’s Cowboy Stringsters”. But when we cleaned up the audio, they make a great sound, superb musicians at the top of their game, adding a touch of hot swinging jazz to familiar western and pop songs popular in the era.

Our second release of the month is Wesley Tuttle and his Texas All Stars. These songs are all from the hundreds that he made for Capitol transcription service back in the 40s. I think you’ll enjoy them and all the stars that played alongside him on these sessions. Just read the excellent notes on this CD by Western Music’s top DJ and reviewer O J Sikes.  We believe that Wesley’s wife Marilyn is alive and in her 90s, I hope this will bring back a few fond memories of by-gone years.

Our third July 2016 CD is by the very much underrated, Chester Smith. I remember buying a number of his 45s from the James Asman record shop just off St Martin’s Lane in London, I believe at the time one of the DJs of the era was clearing out his overflow of stock. I’m so pleased he did and it set me on the trail of looking for more from the US Capitol label.

Chester at that time had teamed up with Hazel Houser and a better performance of Gospel music was hard to find elsewhere. You’ll find that the songs on the CD get better as it rolls along and include Del Reeves on a couple of numbers as well as Hazel Houser .

Last month we released a collection of songs from the Renfro Valley show, in our rush to get it to you on time we missed out checking the cover for any mistakes.  Of course, we made one and the picture on the front cover is Emory Martin and not Emory Arthur.   I am sending everyone a replacement so that you now have it right. We apologise for our mistake. Please dispose of the old cover we do not need it to be returned.

With so many styles within the country music circle we do find it hard to please everyone all the time. Some will like a certain CD and others hate it, it’s a bit like Marmite I suppose.  Down here in my archive I can play just any style of music I want to listen to but if you spent some time here during the day here you’d find us in complete silence. It’s a very rare occasion that I play something whilst I’m working because it puts me off what I’m doing at the time.  I think my brain must be in a mono setting because I cannot listen and work at the same time. Does anybody else have this problem?

Brian Golbey will be away for most of July on his usual trip to the Shetland Isles. I hope the weather stays good as it can be rather wet in that area sometimes.  Don’t worry about your August releases, between us, we’ve managed to get them ready ahead of time for you and they will be posted off at the end of July.

Now we are going to quit the Common Market, I’m wondering if it will make any difference to our copyright laws?  Will they remain the same or will they give us more leeway to produce songs of a later date?  We’ll all have to wait and see what comes up in the future months or if they will ever get around to it.

Down here in Dover, well I’m just hooked on the cause of preservation of the music and hope with our efforts it will survive.  I sincerely hope you’ll all come to think of it as the Golden Age of Country Music that a handful of collectors dedicated themselves to the cause. Old things cannot be replaced, they have to be preserved, they are history, and that is one of the main subjects in our lifetime.

The Very Best from all of us

Dave, Brian & Barry (The BACM Boys) & All the Sidekicks.
