Country Chat - April 2015

April 2015. Hi Everyone. “Here we are again”, as Barnacle Bill the Sailor said, leaving behind us March madness and taking in the April Fools. March was a hectic time for us piecing the three new CDs together and thinking in advance what next to bring out for your entertainment in the months ahead.

In the spare moments that came my way I’ve been busy clearing space to make more room for the ever expanding collection of music that dribbles over our door. Much of it from the 1930s and earlier – it always amazes me that there is so much country music from that time.

There must have been a lot of folks who took to the image of the cowboy and his music – although truth was quite a few ‘cowboy’ performers of the day had never ridden a horse. Likewise I guess those teams of songwriters in Tin Pan Alley churning out the cowboy songs by the hundred, they’d not only never been on a horse but probably never seen a real cow either. There were also the  disaster songs, no sooner had it hit the headlines than out came the song and it was  on a 78 record for all to hear. Without television and very few radios this was a good way of spreading the news via the phonograph record.

Few of the stars of that era ever made it to these shores a notable exception being the great Carson Robison. I believe he made three trips, along with Frank Luther and Vernon Dalhart. A long time old friend told me that when he was 5 years old he had seen Carson Robison play in Southampton. Oh what memories! Others that arrived here in the 30s were Elton Britt and the Beverly Hillbillies, also Jack Savage and possibly a few more that I am not aware of.

So all this brings me to the first of our new releases for April.

CARSON ROBISON – RADIO SHOWS. BACM CD 481

I can think of nothing better than on a hot evening after ploughing the fields all day, just to sit in the old rocking chair on the veranda of the old homestead sipping a cool lemonade and listening to the relaxing voice of Carson Robison and his Pioneers bringing you a few old time tunes to take you into a dream world. Only to be awoken by the wife squawking at you to bring some more wood for the fire or you’ll get no dinner.  Now here’s a question for you. Did Carson Robison invent Rap music? just listen to The Old Chisholm Trail on Programme 4, you’ll see what I mean. It’s mighty close, don’t you think?

There’s a lot more Carson Robison music that I’d like to bring out on our CDs because he was one of the pioneers of the music. We’ll keep our eyes open for the more obscure tracks for our next CD by him and if you have something you’d like to share with other collectors, please contact us.

COUNTRY GOSPEL Volume 3 – From the Loyal Label. BACM CD 482

Lot of pleas for more following our first two volumes – so Phil Tricker got his brain into action and sorted out a fine selection of gospel songs taken from the Loyal label. Just about all of these songs have a strong country music backing, listen to the superb instrumentalists who back these strong singers.

AL VAUGHN – She’s An Okie. BACM CD 483

This CD is mainly for the serious collector.  Al Vaughn wasn’t around very long to record very profusely but in the time that he was active, he recorded enough for us to make up a CD of his work. All these songs were taken from the 4Star label and include a good many unreleased items. Thanks to Kevin Coffey who let us have these tracks from his collection to share with you.

I think you’ll be slightly taken aback with the quality of most of his songs. You’ll find covers of a few songs by artists that started their career on 4Star, like Ferlin Husky or Hank Locklin.  Who knows, Al Vaughn might have been a big attraction in later years if he hadn’t given up the idea of entertaining.  Does anybody know the full story of his later life?  Keep in touch if you do. His story needs rewriting.

We are fast approaching the 500 CD mark, which I think may be a record in the country field. I cannot think of another small production company like ours that has so much good old time country  music to offer. Give us a pat on the back if you like but it’s been a great pleasure doing this by Barry, Brian and myself. If I had enough years left in me I’d personally make it to 1000, but being 80 next year I somehow doubt if that will happen!

Anyway, hope you join me in ‘Keeping on the sunnyside”!

Dave, Barry, Brian. The BACM Boys, plus our ever ready sidekicks, who make it all possible.
