Country Chat - May 2019

May 1st 2019. Here we are again and yet another month has slipped by. Why is it that the older you get, time goes faster or at least it does to me. It seems not so long ago that we started off this venture of releasing on CD collections of recordings that were lying stored away in the Archive – but in fact it is 17 years ago and, after producing three CDs EVERY MONTH since then, we are now up to 631 CDs.

I’m very proud of this and our little company which has outstripped every other source of country music recordings from the 1920s to 1962. If it hadn’t been for various copyright laws we could have extended it to later years, the mid 60s or beyond – but still there were lots of great recordings made in our era and plenty of new discoveries that we haven’t used yet. What keeps us going is the letters and emails of appreciation we get from Country enthusiasts, not just in the USA but from around the world. Sometimes they make suggestions – some singer or group from the past which they’d like to hear and we then dig around and this has often resulted in a CD – so do keep those suggestions and requests coming!

There’s a great new book out for fans of western harmony singing. Or rather its an update. A book about the legendary group , Foy Willing and the Riders Of The Purple Sage. It’s by Foy’s widow Sharon and gives us a history of the group and a must for fans of the group or of the genre. Look for it on Amazon, it’s available there as a paperback and for those in the modern era, in a Kindle edition!

On a downward note, BACM are still being counterfeited so please take care. Fraudsters are copying our CDs and selling them, sometimes at rip off prices and of course you won’t have our guarantee. At BACM we play fair – putting in a lot of work and selling our CDs at a low margin so we just cover the costs. And with us you have our guarantee – in the unlikely event of a fault, we will replace with no quibble. The fraudsters copy everything, our design, songs, and all information making you think that you are buying direct from us. Please take care and please do not pass on your CDs to anyone who you think might be doing this scam.
So on to our CDs for May.

We have our first release of STONEWALL JACKSON recordings, with that strong vibrant country sound of the late fifties.

Our first too from SLIM RHODES who was playing country a good ten years previous to Stonewall, some superb recordings including a lot of excellent instrumental picking on classics like San Antonio Rose, Kentucky Waltz and Spanish Two Step. We’ve also dug up a couple of Radio programmes that give you an idea of what American households were listening to during this period a few years after WW2.
.
Finally a second collection from the great singing cowboy RAY WHITLEY, early star of the WHN Barn Dance show. A fine guitarist and distinctive vocalist and one of those singers of his era whose early recordings were much influenced by the style of Jimmie Rodgers. 36 tracks, from 1935 to the early 1940s, mainly rare and previously on CD; it’s hard to believe that these songs have lasted a good seventy years or more. So this new CD giving them an extended life, I hope that they’ll be around another seventy years or more.

Well, that’s about it for this month – three more CDs done and dusted so it’s on to the next three which we’ll pull out all the stops to have ready for the beginning of June. This will keep us busy but we’ll put aside a little time for the garden – some pruning and weeding needs to be done!

Hoping you enjoy the summer and the music, from all here at the BACM headquarters.
DAVE, BARRY & BRIAN, and all our friends that help us out so much with the production of BACM CDs
