BILLY HUGHES – Rose Of The Alamo. BACM CD 608

Our first compilation from Billy Hughes, the legendary fiddler and multi instrumentalist nowadays perhaps best remembered for his fiddle playing on Jack Guthrie sessions and also for his songwriting credits including writing Red Foley’s 1948 hit, Tennessee Saturday Night. He recorded relatively little under his own name (or names, for some he used "Dude Fargo") but we’ve managed to put together this collection. 27 songs, many of them Hughes’ own compositions, a few of them somewhat risqué!

OVERSTAKE SISTERS – Vol. 3. Ridin’ Down The Trail Together. BACM 609

Following requests from many customers who enjoyed Volumes 1 and 2, here is another CD of recordings by the Overstake Sisters (the "Little Country Girls") blending their voices beautifully to each song. These songs were not commercially released. They actually derived from a fine series of transcriptions on 16" discs that MM Cole made up for radio stations. Two of the sisters’ solo recordings can be found on other BACM CDs (Judy Martin, nee Eva Overstake on BACM discs 96 and 234 – and Jenny Lou Carson, nee Lucille Overstake on BACM 200).

Gather Round – Western Swing & Country Music In West Texas & New Mexico 1946-56. BACM 610

Continuing our releases of music from different areas of the USA, we have put together this bunch of recordings, various artists from the West Texas / New Mexico scene. You’ll find some very rare items amongst this selection. Surely the sort of music which Jim Reeves was listening to in his teens, influencing his own early recordings. This CD is a neat companion to our earlier selection of songs from the Texas Panhandle (BACM CD 574), this time going a bit further west!

Phipps Family BACM CD605-small 150
CD D 605

PHIPPS FAMILY – Sing The Carter Family. BACM 605

The Phipps Family were one of the great interpreters of old timey hillbilly and gospel music, who began performing publicly in the early 1940s and whose performing/ recording career continued through to the late 1980s. Their style was modelled on that of the Carter Family and they recorded several Carter tribute albums. BACM are pleased to present this collection, 23 songs from the Carter Family repertoire culled from recordings the Phipps Family laid down on Starday around 1960. Several of the classics including a superb Wildwood Flower. Impeccable musicianship and great vocals. Fine yodelling on several tracks.

The Novelty Aces - CD 607-small 150
CD D 606

NOVELTY ACES – Transcriptions & Broadcasts. BACM 606

The Novelty Aces were a quartet (later quintet) who included fine musicians and vocalists performing a wide variety of styles including hillbilly and country and novelty, some sung solo some as a close harmony group. Their first recordings, cut for Victor in 1933 appeared on earlier BACM releases (two Jimmie Rodgers songs sung by Hazel Maus on Cowgirl Shuffle BACM CD 421 and two guitar solos by her brother Harold Maus on Hot Guitars Vol 1, BACM CD 554). This dedicated CD 606 features some of their fine transcriptions and radio broadcasts mainly from the mid 1940s, with the group (fine multi instrumentalists themselves) augmented by several important musicians including the legendary guitarists Merle Travis and Jack Rivers and fiddler (and multi instrumentalist) Slim Duncan. A fine hour of easy on the ear listening across a wide mix of styles.

DOLPH HEWITT – Waltzing My Blues Away. CD 607

As we dig through the archives we are sometimes amazed to come across an awesome talent which somehow has been lost to history. One such is Dolph Hewitt who achieved some radio popularity in the 30s on the Wheeling Jamboree before wartime service in the marines. Post war he came to the National Barn Dance giving him nationwide exposure initially as a member of the Sage Riders, a western styled band, later solo. Recording contracts followed and he scored several minor hits first with RCA then with various independent labels. Our CD showcases 27 of his fine recordings, nice mix of songs and styles but mainly smooth crooner country somewhat in the Eddy Arnold style.

EDDIE KIRK Vol 2- Away Out On The Mountain. BACM 602

A second compilation of recordings by Western singer/ songwriter and B-Western actor Eddie Kirk, mainly culled from his Capitol recordings from the late 1940s and early 50s and representative of the West Coast sound of the era. Nice mix of styles and genres including a few demonstrations of Kirk’s yodelling skills.

CD D 603

PRAIRIE RAMBLERS – Vol 4 – Rollin Along. BACM 603

Another collection from that superb team of top vocalists and instrumentalists The Prairie Ramblers with a mix of pop, novelty, western and country tunes. This is our Volume 4 or 5 if you count the Rusty Gill CD we did in our early days – or Volume 6 if we include the ‘risque’ recordings they did as the SWEET VIOLET BOYS (BACM CD 353).

Down Under Country Vol 2 CD 604-small 150
CD D 604

G’Day – Down Under Country Vol 2. BACM CD 604

A second collection of Australian (and a few New Zealand) performers; this time mainly from the 40s and 50s. Plenty of authentic country sounds including good guitar picking and some superb yodeling. Nice to hear the young Mary Schneider, duetting with sister Rita as the Schneider Sisters and a great rendition of Pistol Packing Papa by Tex Morton’s boyhood friend, Gil Harris.
