May 7th. Birthday of pioneering, old timey, blind musician Riley Puckett (May 7, 1894 – July 13, 1946), well known for his founder membership of Gid Tanner’s Skillet Lickers but who also laid down some great tracks as a solo artist. He had a distinctive, sweet baritone voice well fitted for poignant songs; his distinctive guitar style has been widely imitated, influencing  modern bluegrass and flat picking. His 1924 recordings of Sleep Baby Sleep and Rock All Our Babies To Sleep were arguably the first ‘Yodeling Country’ recordings, predating Jimmie Rodgers historic Bristol sessions by three years.
