January 23. Birthday of legendary Canadian “Singing Soldier” Hank LaRiviere (a.k.a. Hank Rivers) , January 23, 1917-May 7, 1996. Outstanding singer/yodeller and composer and radio/TV performer, he first recorded in 1933 before signing to RCA Victor in Montreal in 1939 – joining the label’s other two legends of Canadian Country, Wilf Carter and Hank Snow. LaRiviere enjoyed a long and productive recording and performing career through to the 1970s. Check out the www.hankrivers.com website for more bio and discography info. BACM have compiled a 28 track album featuring several of his hits and own compositions including the widely recorded Maple Sugar Sweetheart. Also features some familiar Jimmie Rodgers and Wilf Carter numbers. Of special interest is “Longing for Old Alberta” which name-checks his friend Gene Autry as well as messrs Rodgers and Carter. This is from his 1967 “Hank’s Centennial Travels” album which has songs about each of Canada’s provinces.
