Skeeter Davis 337

December 30, 2017

December 30th. Birthday of popular country/crossover songstress “Skeeter Davis” (Mary Frances Penick, December 30, 1931 – September 19, 2004). She had a distinctive plaintive voice, often recorded harmonising with herself in multi-track, mimicking the sound of her early ‘50’s duets with Betty Jack Davis as ‘The Davis Sisters’.  As the leading female on RCA’s roster, most of her recordings were produced by Chet Atkins and many feature his  guitar accompaniment – classic “Nashville Country Sound – before the time when lush strings came in and smothered out ‘The Country’”.  The Archive have released this CD, which features her “Lost To A Geisha Girl” hit along with the haunting “Wishful Thinking” and her superb version of Carl Belew’s “Am I That Easy To Forget”.
