August 4. Birthday of the influential country music singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Carson Robison (August 4, 1890 – March 24, 1957). Backed Vernon Dalhart on the first country music million seller, “Wreck of the Old 97” b/w “The Prisoners Song” in 1924. Prolific recording artist who played a major role popularising country music to new audiences not only in the US but elsewhere including Australia and the UK, where in the early 1930s his group performed for the Royal Family including the future Queen Elizabeth. The Archive have so far compiled seven CDs of his work, from early recordings in the mid 1920’s through to the early 1950s.
