22 July – birthday anniversary of Obed “Dad” Pickard (22 July 1874 – 24 September 1954) patriarch of The Pickard Family one of the early pioneers on the roster of the Grand Ole Opry, becoming regulars in 1926. Pickard was a talented multi-instrumentalist and his group The Pickard Family were probably the first traditional vocal family to broadcast, predating the Carter Family by over a year. They achieved considerable regional popularity not just via their WSM appearances but also in Detroit, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia and – in the late 1930s over the powerful border radio station XERA. Their repertoire was a mix of novelty songs and traditional old timey and sentimental songs, showcased on BACM’s CD 084, which features recordings from 1927-29.
