15th July – birthday anniversary of Western Swing musician and bandleader Deuce Spriggins (George Braunsdorf, 15 July 2014 – 31 May 1965) who worked the West Coast in the late 1940s in various groups including Walt & Cal Shrum’s Colorado Hillbillies (BACM CD169) before being drafted in 1941. Post war, joined Spade Cooley’s band who were developing an innovative, highly charged western swing sound. Quit in 1945, taking with him several key members of the group including popular vocalist Carolina Cotton. His group, packed with superb musicians including pianist Eddie Bennett and fiddler Rex Call soon forged a distinctive sound and approach as evidenced on BACM’s collection of recordings which covers the period from mid 1945 to end ’47. We include several radio tracks and five movie ‘Soundies’ – the forerunners of today’s music videos including a superb Down The Trail To San Antone. A formidable talent, he was fictionalised in LA Confidential as “Deuce Perkins”!
