4 October – birthday of Charlie Gore (b. Oct 4, 1930 – ?? 1984), talented and innovative musician who achieved regional popularity through his regular slots on various West Virginia radio stations in the late ‘40s and through the 50s. He played fiddle, guitar and dobro and developed a distinctive style, blending traditional hillbilly with modern rhythms to create his own style of Rockabilly. Our BACM collection features 26 tracks from Gore’s early 50s output, mix of country and his emerging ‘Rockabilly leaning’ hybrid style. Some tracks feature a young Jerry Byrd on steel; Gore himself contributes (variously) fiddle, dobro or guitar behind his distinctive vocals. Nowadays remembered only as a rockabilly artiste and forgotten by country fans – a big talent, well worth a listen.
