4 August – remembering the great Kentucky born and bred songwriter and vocalist Tex Atchison (5 Feb 1912 – 4. Aug 1982). Member of the popular traditional country band The Prairie Ramblers in the 30s (many of their recordings feature Atchisons superb fiddle passages) but thereafter successful on his own recordings and as a session man, and collaborating with the likes of Gene Autry (it is Atchisons fiddle on Autry’s “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “Old Faithful) as well as Merle Travis, Johnny Bond and Johnny Horton. The Prairie Ramblers were early exponents of the evolving Western Swing style, giving Tex the opportunity to develop a jazzy touch to his fiddle playing. Rated “arguably the best left-handed fiddler in the history of country music” by Country music historian Charles K. Wolfe.
