8 December – remembering Country/Rockabilly/Rock & Roll songtress Bonnie Lou (Mary Joan Kath, Oct 27, 1924 – Dec 8, 2015) one of the first country stars to achieve crossover success in Rock & Roll. Her singing/yodelling radio career began in 1941, performing as ‘Sally Carson’, much influenced by Patsy Montana and popular yodeling duo, the Girls of the Golden West. Became ‘Bonnie Lou’ in 1945. Despite the popularity of her radio performances, her recording career didn’t take off till the end of the 1940s. Scored several country top-10 hits in the early ’50s before cutting several in a style which would be later called rockabilly and even full Rock & Roll – yielding several Billboard Top 10 hits. Her long career stretched on into the 1990s as entertainer, TV and radio presenter and DJ.
