25th September – remembering the great, trailblazing honky tonk singer/songwriter Jean Shepard (Ollie Imogene Shepard, (Nov 21, 1933 – Sept 25, 2016). Scored a No. 1 hit in 1953 with her Dear John Letter duet with Ferlin Husky and went on to score 73 hits on the Hot Country Songs charts. Celebrated her 60th Grand Ole Opry performing anniversary in 2015, making her the longest running performer. Several of her early records are showcased on BACM’s CD 170, including her very first, Crying Steel Guitar Waltz. One more sad passing of one of those country music legends from country music’s golden era with an instantly recognisable sound and style.
