21 April – birthday of legendary country singer and banjoist Wade Mainer (Wade Echard Mainer (April 21, 1907 – Sept 12, 2011). Grew up in a log cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains where he absorbed the traditional mountain music of the area and his two-finger banjo fingerpicking style, was a precursor to modern three-finger bluegrass styles. He is sometimes called The Grandfather Of Bluegrass and was an influence on the likes of Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers and Doc Watson. Member of his brother J.E.’s legendary band (J. E. Mainer’s Mountaineers) and later his own band, the Sons Of The Mountaineers which included Clyde Moody on guitar.
