17 January – remembering anniversary of Kentuckian bluegrass singer, guitarist and songwriter Hylo Brown (Frank Brown Jnr., (20 Apr 1922 – 17 Jan 2003). His performing career stretched from the late 1930s through to 1980s, hi-lights including his association with the legendary Bradley Kincaid (he played rhythm guitar on Kincaid’s final Capitol sessions in 1950) and with Bill Monroe as one of the Blue Grass Boys, his membership appearances on the popular Flatt & Scruggs shows from 1957 and his bringing bluegrass to new audiences at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. Although much influenced by Monroe’s ‘Classic bluegrass’ style, Brown was an innovator, creating his unique style on both bluegrass and country.
