16th Dec – remembering Martha Carson (19 May 1921-16 Dec 2004) gospel singer and prolific songwriter who became known as First Lady Of Country Gospel. The BACM have released two CDs of her recordings, some duets with then husband, singer-mandolinist James Roberts (these mainly with Roberts on lead vocals and playing driving mandolin). In 1952 she became the first solo female singing star to join the Grand Ole Opry – several months ahead of Kitty Wells.
