11 September – anniversary of Leon Payne (June 15, 1917 – September 11, 1969), blind country music singer and prolific (1,000 + songs) songwriter nowadays best remembered for enduring classics like I Love You Because (big hit for Jim Reeves) and Lost Highway and They’ll Never Take Her Love From Me, both recorded by Hank Williams. His radio career began in 1935, sometimes showcasing his multi instrumental skills. His recordings appeal to those who like stripped down country, mainly just the artist accompanying himself on guitar or with unfussy steel and BACM have so far released three CD selections, including some rare radio transcripts.
