11 August – remembering legendary steel guitarist Don Helms (Feb 28, 1927 – Aug 11, 2008) best known for his association with Hank Williams but later a prolific session man and producer. Played on around 100 of Hank’s recordings, his wailing steel a perfect fit with Hank’s mournful tones on the likes of I Can’t Help It and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry as well as the driving twang on uptemp classics like Jambalaya and Hey, Good Lookin’.
Helms played on many of Johnny Cash’s early Columbia recordings and is heard on many classic country hits including Patsy Cline’s Walking After Midnight and Lefty Frizzell’s Long Black Veil.
